See How GradGuard Makes Insurance Easier to Understand
Worldwide Property Coverage
Whether you are studying abroad or just visiting a friend in another residence hall, GradGuard's College Renters Insurance can protect you from theft and other causes of loss, anywhere in the world. See policy for complete details.
Some insurance providers offer coverage for your property anywhere in the world, but it is not standard. Please check the policy language for this coverage before purchasing.
Most homeowners insurance policies will extend property coverage to students away at school, but it may be restricted to your on-campus residence. Ask your parent/guardian to check the policy language or speak with their agent before relying on this coverage.
NO CREDIT REPORTING
At GradGuard, we do not believe you should be penalized for poor or lack of a credit history. We DO NOT ask for a SSN and all campus residents will receive the same pricing options.
Many of the large renters insurance companies will run a “soft credit hit” that can have a positive or negative impact on your cost of insurance. Not having any credit history is often a negative impact.
Being added to your parent’s/guardian’s policy may increase their cost of insurance upfront. Ask your agent if there is an added cost associated with this feature.
PENALTY-FREE CLAIMS PROCESS
GradGuard does not believe you should be penalized for using insurance that you pay for! Filing a claim on our College Renters Insurance Policy will not impact the cost of your insurance.
Many insurance companies use previous/current policy claims data to determine your cost of insurance. Ask the agent or search the FAQ section to see if you’ll be impacted by claims you will or already have submitted.
Most homeowners insurance policies will increase the annual cost if any claim is filed. Check with your agent to see if there are any “forgiveness” features before filing a claim.
PENALTY-FREE CANCELLATION PROCESS
GradGuard will cancel your policy penalty-free at any time.*
If paid in full, you may be entitled to a refund as well. You can speak to one of our nationally licensed representatives to find out.
Check your policy and speak to your agent for details on possible limitations.

*Florida and Connecticut Policies run on annual terms. After the policy start date, any unused portion of the premium will be refunded on a monthly pro-rata basis. If cancellation is received prior to the policy start date, then all premium collected for that term will be refunded in full.
ELECTRONICS COVERAGE
Electronics are expensive and GradGuard wants to make sure you’re covered if they’re damaged due to a covered peril. For that reason, GradGuard does not have a separate (lower) coverage threshold for claims made on a single electronic item and will cover up to the policy limits.
Most renters insurance policies have a lower property coverage limit for a singular electronic item. Check the policy’s section related to “items with sub-limits” to see if that’s the case.
Similar to renters insurance, homeowners insurance policies may have a lower property coverage limit for a singular electronic item. Check the policy’s section related to “items with sub-limits” to see if that’s the case.
REPLACEMENT COST ENDORSEMENT
Filing a claim and receiving the cash value of your six-year-old laptop is just wrong. GradGuard’s policy will pay to replace your items at today’s prices in the event of a loss caused by a covered event.
Most renters insurance companies offer this coverage. Ask the agent or check the policy details before purchasing.

DEDUCTIBLE
A deductible is the amount of money ‘deducted’ from your reimbursement check after making a claim. Almost all insurance policies have them.
We want to ensure our customers get the most from their insurance check, so we start by offering a low deductible of $100*.
Most of “the big” renters insurance companies start their renters insurance deductibles at $250.
It is rare to see a homeowners insurance deductible lower than $500. This can often prohibit students from using their parent or guardian’s policy.
*Florida policies require a minimum deductible of $250.
PERSONAL LIABILITY COVERAGE
Causing large-scale accidents can disrupt your education and in most circumstances, you’ll be responsible for any unintentional damage caused to your place of residence. To defend against this, all GradGuard policies include liability coverage to protect you in an event like this.
Other “student renters insurance” products either offer this coverage at an additional cost or not at all.
Confirm with your parent’s or guardian’s agent that coverage will extend to campus before relying on it.
Terms and Conditions of Renters Insurance
Service Policies
Florida and Connecticut Cancellation Policy: Policies run on annual terms. After the policy start date, any unused portion of the premium will be refunded on a monthly pro-rata basis. If cancellation is received prior to the policy start date, then all premium collected for that term will be refunded in full.
All Other States Cancellation Policy: Policies run on monthly policy terms. Once a policy month term has begun, premium for that month is considered fully earned and not eligible for refund. If premiums are collected prior to the coverage start date, they will be refunded in full.
Insured's Address Policy: Policies are issued to a specific address. If your address changes, your policy may need to be modified to ensure coverage. Failing to update your policy address may result in some coverages being unavailable. To update your policy address you must speak directly with a customer service representative by calling GradGuard Customer Service.
Renewal Policy: Your policy may be automatically renewed by GradGuard upon its scheduled expiration. You will receive notification prior to this renewal and have the opportunity to decline your renewal, make changes to your insured address or coverage limits, and cancel your renewal after it has been issued.
Rate Change Policy: Insurance rates are highly regulated by state, and at times insurance rates are changed. If a rate change occurs between your date of purchase and your coverage start date, GradGuard may credit or charge the difference to your credit card on file. You will be notified by email from GradGuard prior to this transaction.
Payment & Cancellation Policy: All scheduled premium payments will be processed automatically on the credit card on file by GradGuard. If a payment transaction is declined, GradGuard will notify you by email. If payment is not received, GradGuard will cancel your insurance policy and will notify you by email of this action.
Earthquake Deductible Policy (California only): Earthquake coverage is subject to a separate deductible of 15% of your personal property coverage.
Service Fees: Every time we charge your card there is a $1 installment fee that needs to be taken. This $1 is automatically added once if you purchase an annual policy, and is automatically added to each payment taken if you select the monthly recurring billing option. The quote given automatically includes this installment fee.
